Another puzzle

This comes from last Wednesday's Daily Mail but I have left one
character out:
"What is the connection between Jane Austen, the Marquis de Sade,
Virginia Woolf, Hermann Goering and the Earl of Lucan".
Clue: It would have been more appropriate on Thursday.

Given the subject of this forum and Thursday being the anniversary of
the death of Diana, Princess of Wales is that they are all related in
some way to each other and the Yorkists.

Correct - they are all related to each other and the late Princess of
wales. The sixth character is Bertrand Russell, who I have mentioned a
little - he and Diana are both also descended from Charles II.

How are they all related?

Or would that take too long to answer?

I'm afraid it might. As it stands, I don't know the details - except Diana and Bertrand Russell being cousins through Charles II - but Tompsett and van den Pas must have the answers somewhere!

Hi, there!

Yes, I can understand how the Brits might be related, but I would be
particularly interested to see the connection with Hermann Goering and the
Marquis de Sade!

As you said, you would think that info might be available somewhere on the
Web. If you find it, would you let us know??

Thanks! That was fascinating!

I think I mentioned this earlier, but late last year I pulled down an
article on genetic studies, which used the Yorks as a case study. Long
story short, we don't have to go back too many generations (relatively
speaking) until everyone of European descent, is related in some way to
everyone else of European descent. A 1910 tally put Edward III's direct
descendants at about 100,000. I can only imagine what the figure is in 2006.

Still, Herman Goering and was never my favourite relative. He always
seemed at bit odd at the reunions an' all. On the other hand, de Sade
could tell some good stories, and all the cousins had a soft spot for him.

I would had thought it would have been more than 100,000 even in 1910.

Personally this cousin doesn't have a soft spot for de Sade!

That's what I thought, too, Kay. But then, it all goes back further than
that. Henry I had at least twenty bastards. What a guy!

It's estimated that approximately half the population of England is
descended from William the Bastard.

Furthermore, if (as most scholars agree) Jesus was married and had
children and (as some sensationalist writers suggest) that his
descendants married into French Royalty, then the vast majority of
people of European descent are descendants of Joshua-ben-Joseph and
through him (according to the New Testament) the ancient Kings of
Judah going back to Saul, David and Solomon.

Of course some believe that Jesus-Joshua wasn't the son of Joseph at
all, but such credibility is to be frowned on in this enlightened age.

I guess that we are all bastards at some point. The lesson here is that
none of us can go around with a holier-than-thou attitude. Not sure that
we all have Jesus' blood. I'll go next door and ask my neighbours, the
Christs, what they think.

Good for you Bill - for questioning that statement
"if (as most scholars agree) Jesus was married and had
> children and (as some sensationalist writers suggest) that his
> descendants married into French Royalty"
The "sensationalist writers" comment is true but, unless you have only read or watched the spurious "gospels" and other traditions that are not accepted in academia on which the "DaVinci Code" and similar things were based in the past, to say that most scholars agree that Jesus was married is ludicrous. And if that is all a person has read then they need to do more research.

I don't mean to be arrogant here but I have been studying the life of Jesus for 40 years and know what the scholars know and what they speculate, which writings are authentic and which are questionable.

You all are the Richard III experts and I would believe most anything you agree on but when it comes to Jesus...

On the subject of bastards, is there a definitive answer on the
question of Richard's illegitimate lines dying out?
His daughter Katherine married Lord Herbert, but seems to have died
without issue.
But there are stories about a son who survived by concealing his
identity, and ended up working as a bricklayer. Any stories about his
having descendents?
Perhaps, like the modern Hitlers, he decided it was best to end the
line...

Barbara Willard's 'Mantelmas' series of novels for intelligent older
children gives him several generations of descendants.

Richard Broom is buried at Eastwell, near Ashford in Kent. The church was a
victim of friendly fire during the Second World War and there isn't much
left. He is said to have sought shelter from ?Thomas Moyle of Eastwell and
to have lived there in anonymity. (I recently discovered that part of
Boughton Aluph Church - a few miles away and part of the same parish - is
called the Moyle Chapel. Boughton Aluph is also where Alfred Deller is
buried, and where the music festival he founded takes place in June.)
