Another Stanley gets the chop - 166 years too late, I think.

The Man and Scythe was the cognizance of the Pilkington family, who lost their Lancashire lands to the Stanleys after Bosworth and never got them back.

I have always thought it slightly spooky that the Civil War Earl of Derby spent his last night on earth in a building that was connected to this rival family.

Ironically, I understand that the Pilkingtons, or their company, anyway, now own the site of Lathom!

It was stated in the press at the time of the 500 year commemoration of Bosworth that the Pilkingtons and Stanleys do not dine together to this day, though I suspect this may have been a bit of press "puff".
