I was looking for a copy of Henry of Huntingdon' s work several years
back, but was thrown off by the horrendous cost (several hundred
dollars). Surely there must be a reasonably priced edition somewhere.

The book is entitled "The Puritan Earl", published in 1967. Amazon
says it is out of print but may have some second-hand copies
available. Until then, we will have to rely on the libraries.

Try www.Abebooks.com---they're a worldwide source of used, out-
of-print and hard-to-find books----sometimes you can get quite the
bargain if you're a persistant hunter.

Abebooks is wonderful. They're located in Victoria, B.C., out in Rose's
neck of the woods. Another Canuck achievement. Whee!

I think I threw a spanner in the works over Henry of Huntingdon. I was
actually looking for an edition of his works several years back, rather
than a book about him. I hit Abebooks and blanched at the price. For the
amount they wanted to charge me, I fully expected him to resurrect and
re-write the bloody thing from memory.

hi all..
i've been away for the past week..anyhow, my fav book searching site is.
www.bookfinder.com

"The Puritan Earl" is available from 19.99 canadian.
i like bookfinder because it is international, and lists place like abebooks.

i made an awesome purchase last year. the complete lisle letters all six volumes..for 60 brit pounds..mind you it cost as much to mail them to west coast canada as it did to buy them..but they still came in about 100 dollars cheaper if i had bought them from a north american seller.

also..searching ebay can *sometimes* net interesting finds in books, items etc. but don't hold your breath..just occassionally check it out.

anyhow..i know i owe some responses..i'll try to get to them early next week. i've only been home for about 2 hours.

nuh-uh..i'm a canadian, who happens to be also a citizen of the british commonwealth.

i bought the books from the uk. ergo, i ain't no traitor...:-))

until canada becomes a republic..buying brit is keeping the money in the "family".

besides that..having the queen as our absolute head of state means we can appeal to her to intercede should stephen harper become a little too ignorantly arrogant.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Prerogative

in canada our govenor general is the queen's representative. our gg can disolve parliament..and she is..
"The governor general is designated by law as commander in chief of the Armed Forces, is charged with swearing in Cabinet ministers and commissioning high officials of state"
http://www.canadianencyclopedia.ca/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0003350

ergo, she does have the ability to get canada out of afghanistan..only our media doesn't tell us such things do they?

the queen can declare peace too. see royal perogative above.

we the people of the commonwealth have been misled regarding the power of the queen and her representative..
as citizens..we can appeal to the queen and her rep, if we find our parliament/government is overstepping their rights..and on any citizen's rights.

damn, i love the monarchy...if we could only wake more people up to the fact that there is more to her, than her picture on our money, and licking the back of her head when we want to post a letter.

Perhaps it is true in theory that people can appeal to the Queen about their rights but would she, in practice, do anything about it?

you'd have to follow due process, and exhaust all other possible means of having "your voice" heard regarding a valid issue. but, yes ordinary citizen's can appeal to the queen to intercede on their behalf IF they have a very valid case to request the monarch to "rule" on their behalf.

i locked horns with my provinical government regarding an issue. i was told i could go no further, i had exhausted my appeals to the prov. gov....to which i responded..i still had the lt. gov, and then the gg, and if i didn't get action there i could and would appeal to the queen to intercede...and guess what..all of a sudden, my "voice" was heard, and my issue resolved in my favour. i knew i had a strong case...you can fight city hall or in my case..the local school board.

moreover, if enough individual citizens (mega lots) were all making the same/similiar request, the queen has the "royal perogative". (see the link below).

public opinion can and does sway politicians and monarchs. (think wallace simpson and princess margaret and the results there. charles, di and camilla, etc, members of the royal family paying income tax).

the monarchy does not want to be toppled again.
the fundamentalist religious (puritans) right did it under cromwell. and here we are again having our rights and freedoms curtailed by the neocon (puritan) fundamentalists. this time we need to use the monarchy to protect us from them. "witchhunts" are so 17thC.

if the queen "knows" public opinion is there. she can and will act.

citizens of the commonwealth have "just" been led to believe the queen/king is a figure head..but they truely do still retain powers to put our parliaments, regional/federal back into "place".

we the people have the power to give the queen "the power".

in canada..the gov gen, opens and closes and our parliament. our prime minister has to request the gg to disolve parliament when an election is called, and to instate the newly elected p.m.

isn't that a big clue as to the power of the queen? if aus's government works the same way..then you as individual, or as a group can appeal to the queen.

Holy Jumpin', Roslyn, you sure are steamed at the powers that be. I
can't say I blame you. When I lived in B.C. I couldn't make hide nor
hair of B.C. politics. Of course, when I was there, you were dealing
with Wacky Bennett and 'Flying Phil' Gagliardi*. I was at Simon Fraser
University, which gave me a really bizarre 'take' on things. I actually
took part in a sit-in for something or other---freedom of speech for
tutorial assistants, or some damned thing. There's a plaque in honour of
our great 'sacrifice' bolted to the lectern in the SFU 'agora'. The
sacrifice was probably running out of beer. It was an awful ordeal. Of
course, another participant was one Margaret Sinclair (later Trudeau)
who had a 'thing' for the Rolling Stones and Maoists.

*Suffice it to say that Wacky and 'Flying Phil' make Dick Cheney look
like Mother Theresa. Actually that's not totally true, but I'm too beat
to come up with a proper analogy. Just got home from an Italian/German
wedding that featured a piper. Please don't ask why. I don't know why.
All I know is that 'Ode to Joy' on the bagpipes is really taxing.

Good night, all.

Re: [Richard III Society Forum] At last ........

bc politics is never boring. i grew up under wacky bennett and flying phil..(we have some awesome hwys..which is how he got the name flying phil..he liked to drive fast.)

after wacky..we had his son wacky jr...and we've had vanderzam..aka vanderscam..and bingo gate and on and on..one despot or scandal after another...and currently we have a premier who got busted for drunk driving in hawaii. that got the MADD crowd mad..but the dufus is still in power selling bc out to private interests...mostly american.

my local mp has been john reynolds..currently in charge of running harper's campaign machine (he went to the republican national convention in 2004 to learn how to campaign ala karl rove)..and the town i live in formed the original concepts for the CCF (j.s. woodworth lived here in the 19teens) which evolved into tommy douglas's NDP which gave canada our national health care system along with other social safety nets.

margaret trudeau's grandparents owned a home locally. i've seen trudeau sitting on their fence getting swifter and higher...just as our disgraced bc olympic snowboarding champion managed to be. only trudeau didn't have a snowboard.

so..yes, i've very political..and very informed.
i hate being lied too..and i don't think there is an honest ELECTED offical out there..they are all "sell-outs" to the party line..no matter their intentions when they get elected. they want to get re-elected..ergo there goes the "personal value and belief system". now with that being said..some of the elected officals are better than others. but they need our help to turn things around.

we the people need to stop being apathic and get involved and informed.
we've been fed a lot of lies..from before and including the time of richard iii, right up to present day.

the queen isn't elected..she can be swayed more easily than the elected officals. they don't have a dynasty to protect..even wacky bennett's line proved to not be able to hold the "throne of bc".

She must be totally PO'd at us for that disagreement in 1776.

Carol
(whose grandmother was a member of the Daughters of the American
Revoluation. Although I think she did pardon us during the
