The nave of York Minster has been cleared of its 800 chairs, giving
visitors a glimpse of how the cathedral would have looked to medieval
worshippers. The nave will remain empty until February 19, allowing the
cavernous 260ft by 100ft (80m by 30m) space to be used for special
events. The minster will take advantage of the extra room by holding a
youth event, a concert, circle-dancing and a Taize service. The nave is
emptied once a year during the Minster's quiet post-Christmas period. In
medieval times it was also used as a marketplace and, in the 1500s,
there were complaints about boys playing football there. York Minster is
England's largest medieval cathedral and can trace its origins to 627.
