Stanley - I do love your photos of Minster Lovell. It is nice to wander around where you
know Richard and Anne spent some time. Incidentally I found out recently that during
their stay there some of Richards entourage stayed at the inn (forget its name) in the
village. In the spring I am leaving London and will be living not far from Minster Lovell.

Hello Eileen, I am glad that you liked the photogarphs of Minster
Lovell manor house (which was once known as the "Lovell Castle"). I
was unsure how they would appear on the site, and I have probably
downsized the tower too much!
There is some debate about Richard and the Old Swan. I personally
think that he would have stayed in the manor house, possibly in the
newly-built South Tower, which contained a grand chamber with a
projecting oriel window, so that those within could admire the river
Windrush. As you will probably know, in July 1484 (?) Richard wrote at
least one letter from Minster, ending it with the words "Yeven undre
our signet at the manor of Mynster Lovel the XXIX day of Juyll". He
would presumably have signed it "the Swan" if he was staying at the
inn.

No I did not know about the letter. Thank you. He must have wanted to linger on for a
while at such a beautiful location. Oh yes I agree Richard would have stayed at the hall
itself. Probably just a few of the' lower' ranks staying at the swan.
It must have been amongst the happiest days for them. Iwas wondering if it was after that
stay that they parted company for a while Anne returning to Middleham and Richard
somewhere else. They must have gone through Burford or even stayed there do you
think?

It is a few years since I last looked round the ruins at Minster
Lovell, on a beautiful sunny day when the place was filled with a
feeling of peace and tranquillity - such a contrast to how it must
have been when Francis was the owner and the King came to stay.
From the Buck print of c.1740, do I gather that the buildings were
still intact then ? I had vaguely assumed that its ruinous state
probably dated from the Civil War, but if not, when did the manor
become ruinous ?

The Buck print of Minster Lovell (which may be nearer 1730 than 1740
in date) shows that the Hall Block was still intact, although the wall
that had formerly enclosed the northern court yard had been partially
demolished. I suspect that the main block may originally have been
provided with crenellations - the tower that can be seen in the centre
of the structure gave access to a rampart or wall walk. Sadly, the
manor house was dismantled circa 1746).
The building played no part in the Civil War. It was, at one time, a
Tudor royal palace, Henry VII having stayed there on at least three
occasions - the attraction being the proximity of Wychwood Forest
(where Henry VII had a hunting lodge) and the much more important
royal palace of Woodstock.

Dear all,
I've been reading the discussion on Minster Lovell and
the photos with interest, but I seem to have missed
the message with their URL. Could someone please post
it again? Thanks.

Many thanks. I hadn't realized that they were on the
Yahoo!. I thought they might have been on a separate
site, or perhaps on the parent society site, or even
on one of those online utilities, such as Flickr.
Speaking of the latter, I went to
http://www.flickr.com/ and searched on "Minster
Lovell" and pulled up hundreds of photos -- some quite
splendid (glorious interiors of the dovecote, e.g.),
others (I suspect) being shots from student parties in
the vicinity. It's fascinating to see a site through
others' eyes by seeing what they found worth
documenting.

Flickr is amazing. I used it when I needed images related to Ireland.
There's almost no place on earth that you can't find there.
