Richard at Minster Lovell
Richard at Minster Lovell

Richard visited Minster Lovell manor house after his coronation at
Westminster, travelling via Reading, Oxford and Woodstock Palace. The
route from Woodstock to Minster would probably have been along the
anicent ridgeway route via North Leigh, Witney and Burford - a
leisurely days journey. I am not sure where he went after that,
because I was more concerned with finding evidence for his visit to
Francis Lovell's house at Minster Lovell. In passing, it may be worth
mentioning that the letter writtem by Richard at Minster is the one in
which he appears to have "inside knowledge" about the fate of the
Little Princes.

I was afraid somebody might ask me where I found the Minster Lovell
letter! It was in one of the more popular illustrated histories of the
period - I THINK it may have been The Life & Times of Richard III by
Anthony Cheetham (1972). I was writing about the manor house, rather
than Richard when I consulted the book but, if I remember correctly,
the letter in question was thought to be the only indication that has
ever been found to suggest that Richard might have known something
about the murders.

many thanks for your prompt response stanley.
does anyone on the forum have easy access to this book to be able check if it is the source for the 1484 letter? or does someone know where a copy of letter might be accessed?
regards
roslyn

The letter which I think is quoted in The Life & Times of Richard III
by Anthony Cheetham (1972) would have been written in July 1483 (not
1484), shortly after Richard's coronation. It is quite well known,
insofar it would appear to be the only evidence - albeit very slender -
which links Richard to the murders. It is mentioned in several
Richard III web sites, but I have not been able to find a full quote.

This is the one with the cryptic reference to "an
enterprise"?
