I wonder if I am the only person who is becoming increasingly annoyed
by the increasing use of Eastern European locations for films and TV
programmes that are supposed to be set in England. A Knights Tale, for
example, was filmed in the Czech Republic (with fairly successful
results). However, the latest Robin Hood television series was filmed
in Bulgaria - and it looks nothing like England.

And if they didn't go to Eastern Europe they wouldn't be able to make
them.
In the 60s they went to Spain, which was cheaper then. Spain looks
little like Arabia or Moscow normally, but great designers made it
so. Now the designers have smaller budgets to make the east look like
Medieval England, which of course was covered with woods, much like
Eastern Europe still is. So Bulgaria looking nothing like England
today? Certainly doesn't, but England in 1100? Not so sure about that.

they filmed brokeback mountain in the rockies/alberta, canada..and the montana tourism board was flooded with calls with people asking how they could book a holiday at brokeback mountain.
canada, (especially vancouver and toronto) is known as hollywood north. our dollar is worth less than the american dollar, ergo the yanks get more bang for their buck.
the x-files were filmed in and around vancouver..again, it was cheaper for the production to be done in canada...and the list goes on and on.
the 13th warrior aka eaters of the dead was filmed along the bc coastline. i even got to see the "viking" ship up close.
