Following on from recent messages concerning these bones - I was just thinking - if the
Abbey ever did allow new investigation/examination of the bones and following on from
that they came to the conclusion these were not the bones of the Princes they would be in
a bit of a pickle as to what to do with them. They could hardly put them back in the urn
and leave them in the Abbey. Recycle them I suppose. Maybe this is one reason, if only a
small one, as to why they will not allow a new examination.

I don't see why they couldn't be kept in the Abbey.
There's certainly lots of non-royals buried there. But
I could see them moving them to another spot and, of
course, updating the plaque.

I recently read that they can do these new dating tests on teeth. I seem to recall there were teeth in the collectiion of "bones" found in the Tower. Now, maybe it is just me, but testing on a tooth seems less intrusive than testing the actual bones. Especially since these tests do not destroy the tooth the way that carbon dating destroys the bone. And this is a dating test, not a DNA test but it would answer the question of the age of the remains. If they are Roman or something like that then no further tests are needed. Perhaps someone who is "up" on these newer tests could talk to this issue. Im sorry I don't have more concrete info but I seem to remember this was some kind of irradiating procedure.

I've spent the last few months of my life at the mercy of a colicy baby and have been following the chats in silence but...
Funny that you would mention that about the bones....the other night I couldn't sleep and somehow my thoughts turned to the princes and I started to think that if this were a modern day case, with Richard alive and in prison for his "crime," then some young idealist lawyer group would go through all the legal loop holes to get the bodies and do some good modern tests on them and thus the man who gave us blind justice could at last benefit from his own work.
And that, my friend, is a run on sentence, but I mean it, where is the law professor who will assign this to his bright eyed geniuses?!?!

The trial of Richard III on the accusation of the murder of his
nephews has been the subject of moot court sessions in law schools.
I once saw a televised version which included some US Supreme Court
Justices, if memory serves me right. An actor dressed as Richard (no
hump) sat at the defendant's table; everyone else was in modern
dress. All sorts of historical testimony and evidence was
introduced, including diagrams of the Tower, and it was very
interesting.
Richard was acquitted.

Katy:
Thanks for the link to the trial documentation. Very interesting!
I'm not sure I'd agree that the writings of William Shakespeare could be considered "evidence", although I do agree with the acquittal.

I recall in the C4 programme Richard was acquitted and that had
Buckingham been in court he would probably have been arrested on the
way out with a view to putting him on trial for the murders.

Yes. The one in England was the first, IIRC. There is a paperback book of
the transcript of the proceedings.
It is called "The Trial of Richard III" and appeared on Britain's Channel 4
in 1984. The book is published by Alan Sutton Publishing and you can
probably get it through the R III Society.

That is very interesting...but I was thinking of those young watch dog type groups that you always hear about who go in and free a man who has been in prison for fifteen years....seems like they are always using DNA...

The channel 4 Trial is on the dvd Special edition of Olivier's film
version of Shakespeare's play.
Very long, but at least Richard is acquitted.

you don't have to buy it on ebay. It is readily available on all the
usual sites on the web..as long as it states that is the special
edition with Lawrence Olivier then it should contain the trial. I am

That was the problem. At the sites I checked, none
ever said anything about the trial being included and
I didn't want to take the chance of buying the dvd
only to find it wasn't on there. No offense to
Olivier, but I'm not really interested in seeing the
play.

I didn't want to take the chance of buying the dvd
only to find it wasn't on there. No offense to
Olivier, but I'm not really interested in seeing the
play.
