Hi,

Can anyone identify the Countess of Rivers who attended the coronation
of Elizabeth of York and the court Christmas festivities in 1487? Would
this have been Anthony Woodville's widow, or did his brother Earl
Richard marry?

i have found no info on anthony's brother, richard marrying. richard d. 1490/1.

anthony had one illegit dau, margaret b. circa 1462 by gwenlian stradling.

mary fitzlewis was anthony's widow. mary is the dau of henry fitzlewis and elizabeth beaufort. (yes, them beauforts) and henry's sister is margaret, a close and personal friend of e4. wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

i haven't found a death date for mary. her second marriage to george neville occurred after 1485. they had a dau, anne b. circa 1500. george's parents were george neville and margaret fenne.

geo's paternal gr. grandparents were joan beaufort, and ralph neville, via edward m. elizabeth beauchamp. this makes geo's maternal gr. granparents, isabel de spencer and richard beauchamp d. 1422.

so we're back to the worcester connection too..:-))

The alternative "Elusive Mistress", indeed?

Thanks. that's been a help. I had always understood Richard Woodville
jr didn't marry, and certainly there's no mention of a wife, late or
otherwise, in his will, but I couldn't find a date of death for Mary
FitzLewis so I couldn't be sure it was her. Your information on the
marriage to George Neville does, however, prove she was still alive
and well in 1487, and probably not even remarried. So she would seem
to be the lady. Sir Richard FitzLewis was also at the coronation
feast.
The Countess of Rivers had quite a prominent, if somewhat
uncomfortable, role at Elizabeth's coronation feast, kneeling on one
side of her holding up a "kerchief" to her at various times (the
Countess of Oxford was kneeling on the other side of the Queen).
The people I really feel sorry for, though, are Dame Katherine Grey
and Mistress Ditton, who "Wente vndre The Table Wher the satt on
ether side the quenes fetee Al the dyner tyme".
