Has anyone been watching BBC1's adaptation of Mrs. Gaskell's novels.,
set in Knutsford, Cheshire?
Intriguingly, one of her characters is a Miss Pole, played by Imelda
Staunton. (Sir) Richard Pole came from a Cheshire family - was Mrs.
Gaskell aware of this?

She probably did: Mrs. Gaskell was good at research and liked it (take a gander at her "Sylvia's Lovers") and be affectionately amazed at her research into nothern whaling communities). As far as I know, the series isn't available over Brooklyn-way yet, but "Cranford" is one of my very favorite pieces of literature, and I hope they're doing justice to Miss Mattie.

Maria,
It is gorgeous! They are repeating each episode and I am watching
both showings, as well as recording the whole series on dvd. One of
the BBC's best ever adaptation, I end each epsiode purring like a cat
with pleasure.
Hope you get the chance to see it.
