Does anyone know if it has been discovered why Stillington was called
to Rome in 1475? Just wondering-

No, I don't know but:

The Vatican "Secret" Archives (they were once!) were described in some
detail in a recent Bulletin. How refreshing to see such fascinating
subjects back on the Forum.

Stephen, I saw the recent posts which is why I thought that someone
maybe had investigated this since the archives are now available. I
looked online briefly at the archives but had no idea how to go about
finding any type of information. (or if anything would in fact be
documented about why he was called to Rome after his imprisionment in
the Tower). I just so happened that, in reading the recent posts on
the availability of the "secret archives", I was also reading Robin
Neillands The War of the Roses and she mentioned Stillingtons recall
of Chancellor of England and imprisionment in the tower and his
summons to Rome where he was "closely examined by the Papal
Commission at the Vatican" and that "what they wanted to know is
still a secret in the Vatican archives". SO it clicked.........thus
my wondering question.....

It was some time in 2006, I think. There was an address, telephone
number and e-mail address for the "Vatican Secret Archives". I hope
to use it myself to investigate the murders of the last two Pole
brothers (Rome, 1605 and 1619) as soon as my Richard de la Pole
research is complete.

Stillington's revelation, leading to Clarence's outburst and
subsequent death all happen within three years of his visit. You are
right - it is intriguing.

There was an article following up Philippa Langley's letter in the following Bulletin, summer 2005. This is called the Nature of Research, pp15-18.

I misremembered; there was no e-mail or physical address but the
website is listed - see Files as promised - and the other details are
probably on it. Note that Charles V's sacking of Rome in 1527, two
years after Pavia, led to pillaging of the Archives.

Use of the Vatican secret archives - was Stillington's visit to Rome

2008-07-18 15:28:26
Stephen Lark
I have not yet contacted the VSA but am reading Sarah
Gristwood's "Arbella" and can see certain links between these last
Pole brothers and possible conflict with the Elizabethan/Jacobean
state involving exiled English Catholic Plantagenets such as
themselves:
The murders happened in the Farnese household, headed by the Duke of
Parma who was involved with the Armada.
Just before this, there was a suggestion that a Farnese wanted to
marry Arbella.
The first murder was in the year of the Gunpowder Plot.

PS I shall also post this on another place in case I am drifting OT
but I know that certain people were interested.
