the height of Margaret of York
the height of Margaret of York

The wikipedia article on Margaret of York says that she was a woman of
6 ft tall without giving references. Does anyone have any idea where
this might have come from. The concept of the height of the family of
York is one that interests me very much. This is because I remember
hearing when I was very young that Elizabeth of York was a very tall
woman (though I cannot remember where I heard this from) I am aware
that this is a subject that has been done to death in various forms,
with various members ( including myself) giving evidence from their own
families in the extreme variation in height. Could anyone give any
references to the physical appearance of Margaret??

That would make Richard's sister and niece almost certainly taller than
himself.
Coincidentally, I have been reading an article about tall female and
short male celebrities today - Mme Sarkosy, Sophie Dahl, L'wren Scott
and Nancy Dell'olio all have or had famous partners shorter than
themselves yet all, apparently, are from tall families. Tall women have
even taller brothers, fathers and uncles most of the time.

Well, they were all descended from Edward Longshanks ! Of the early
Plantagenets, Henry II is said to have been of middle height,
likewise John, whereas Richard I is said to have been tall for his
era; can't recall what is said re Henry III. Does anyone know where
the notably tall Edward I is supposed to have inherited his height
from ?

I have read that, calculating from the length of a sword he is known
to have used, Henry II was 6 feet to 6-2.
I have likewise read that William of Normandy was around six feet, but
I don't know how that calculation was reached.
Perhaps Edward I got his height from his ancestor Ralf the Ganger, who
supposedly was so tall that he couldn't ride the small horses of his
native Norway. ("Ganger" means walker.)
